Nicholson rode Nereo at the top-level international event that drew 84 entrants from 10 countries. With a score of 40.2 putting him in sixth place following the dressage phase, Nicholson had penalty-free rides in both cross-country and show-jumping to move into third place.

Nicholson chooses products manufactured by Bluegrass Horse Feeds, a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research, to fuel the training and performance efforts of his top-level event horses.

After posting excellent scores on the dressage and cross-country days, Andrew Nicholson and Quimbo added no jumping faults and only three time faults in the show jumping phase to win the first-place ribbon at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.

Nicholson finished in third place with another horse, Calico Joe. His score coming into the show jumping phase was good enough to allow him to have three rails down and still claim the third spot. Nicholson, a rider from New Zealand, is sponsored by Bluegrass Feeds in Ireland. Bluegrass Feeds is a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research.

Nicholson Named Top World Eventer for 2012

New Zealand event rider Andrew Nicholson ended the 2012 competition year as the leader on the HSBC Rankings list. He received a $50,000 (U.S.) bonus for his accomplishment. Nicholson captured the top world ranking after claiming team bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games and maintained the position for the rest of the year.

John McEwen, First Vice President of the FEI, presented the honor to Nicholson at the London International Horse Show. Besides his Olympic performance on Nereo, other successes for the year included a seventh-place finish at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, a win at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (third leg of the HSBC FEI Classics 2011/2012 series), and a fourth at the following leg, the Luhmühlen CCI4*.

Eager to share the credit for his wins, Nicholson said, "I've been extremely lucky with my horses Nereo, Mr Cruise Control, Calico Joe, Avebury, and Qwanza." He is sponsored by Bluegrass Horse Feed, a Kentucky Equine Research Team Member.

Nicholson Tops FEI World Ranking for Event Riders

Andrew Nicholson, an international event rider, is ranked number one in the world by the Federation Equestre Internationale in the discipline of eventing. The FEI standings are based on results from each rider's competitions, from which Nicholson has earned over 60 more points than the second-ranked rider.

Besides bringing home a bronze medal from the Olympic Games in London, Nicholson has finished in first place in a number of top-level events this year. Most recently, he rode Nereo to first place at the Pau CCI**** event in France. He claimed seventh place with Mr. Cruise Control in the same division, where more than half of the 63 starting horses failed to finish. Earlier in the year, Nicholson won the Barbury Castle Horse Trials and the Burghley Horse Trials with Avebury. He also rode Quimbo to wins at the Boekelo and Blenheim events this fall.

Andrew Nicholson won the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials in early September. The win was Nicholson's third time to claim victory at this international-class event held in England.

Riding the 12-year-old Avebury, Nicholson was in second place before the show jumping phase and had one rail down, but his score took him into first place when the leading rider, Sinead Halpin, had three fences down and dropped to second.

At the Barbury International Horse Trials held last weekend in Barbury, Wiltshire, U.K., Andrew Nicholson captured first and second place in the CIC*** division. Claiming the lead on Avebury after the dressage phase, the New Zealand rider had no faults on cross-country or show jumping and finished as the champion. His dressage score on Quimbo was not as good, but another clean record in the other two phases allowed the pair to collect reserve honors.
Nicholson in Top Five at Luhmuhlen Four-Star Event

Riding Calico Joe in the horse's second start at the four-star level, New Zealand's Andrew Nicholson claimed fourth place at the Luhmuhlen three-day event in Germany.

A good dressage test started the pair off on the right foot, and a clear cross-country ride put Nicholson in fifth place before the show jumping phase. With a single rail down, he moved up in the overall standings, finishing with 45.7 penalties.

Nicholson also rode Mr Cruise Control at the event and was pleased to receive a score of a perfect 10 on one of his dressage moves. Getting a 10 is a rare event for any rider, and this score came from a top international judge at one of the few four-star events in the world. Mr Cruise Control would have finished first for the weekend but had some problems on the cross-country course, picking up jumping and time penalties to knock him far down in the final standings.

Andrew Nicholson will ride three horses at the Bramham International Horse Trials in Yorkshire, England, in mid-June. Nicholson, who represents New Zealand in international competition, will pilot his Olympic mount Nereo in the CIC*** division and will also ride Avebury, his Olympic backup horse, and Tristar II in lower divisions.

An event at the three-star level is a difficult test for any horse, but Nicholson will not be concentrating on winning at Bramham. Rather, he will use the competition as a last training tune-up. Conditioning for the Olympic Games has been difficult for riders based in England because several of the spring's events have been curtailed or cancelled due to severe weather. The Bramham event will serve as the final selection trial for the British Olympic team.

Nicholson Scores Top Finishes at Weston Park Horse Trials

Andrew Nicholson had a win with Quimbo in the Advanced Section J at the Weston Park Horse Trials in Shropshire. The gelding moved into first place when William Fox-Pitt, the leader after the dressage phase, dropped in the standings because of cross-country time penalties added to his score. Quimbo also had time penalties but finished in first place by two points.

Nicholson claimed second place with Nereo in Advanced Section L after a single show jumping rail dropped the pair out of first place.

He also finished in second place in Advanced Section A on Avebury, one of his possible Badminton entries.

Sponsored Riders Finish Well at Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event

In a demanding competition in which fewer than half the starters completed all three days of the event, riders sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research (KER) and its Team Members claimed four of the top twelve spots when the final results were posted.

Karen O'Connor rode Mr. Medicott, a 13-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, to fourth place in the event. In fourth after the dressage phase, O'Connor had a few time penalties on the cross-country course to drop to fifth at the end of the second day. Her double-clear stadium round helped her advance to a final fourth-place standing. An experienced horsewoman who has won the event in the past, O'Connor is hoping to ride for the United States in this summer's Olympic Games in London. She is sponsored by KER and also by Pennfield Equine Feed Technologies.

New Zealand rider Andrew Nicholson finished in seventh place on Qwanza, a nine-year-old CDE mare. Nicholson, who is sponsored by KER Team Member Bluegrass Horse Feeds, stood in 24th place after dressage. He rode double-clear rounds in both the cross-country and stadium phases, moving him up to seventh position.

Another rider who moved up considerably because of excellent cross-country and stadium rounds was Phillip Dutton, who placed tenth on Mighty Nice and twelfth on Fernhill Eagle. Both horses are Irish Sport Horse geldings. Though he had stadium rails down with each horse, Dutton finished with fewer penalties than many riders because of his fast and accurate rides in the cross-country phase of the event. Dutton is sponsored by KER.

Sponsored Rider Near Top of Eventing Rankings

New Zealand event rider Andrew Nicholson holds second place in the HSBC Rankings, 59 points behind leader William Fox-Pitt and 146 points ahead of Piggy French. The ranking system is based on points earned in the previous 12 months of competition, so riders lose points gained from events that occurred more than a calendar year ago.

Rankings may change after the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event to be held in late April. Fox-Pitt has one horse entered, while Nicholson has listed three entries in the challenging competition.
