Sale Price for Thoroughbreds: No Guarantee of Racing Success

Paying a high price for a young Thoroughbred is no guarantee you'll end up with a future Kentucky Derby winner. This year's Derby finishers are proof of that, as Falling Sky, the nineteenth and last horse to cross the finish line, brought $425,000 at the Ocala Breeders winter mixed sale just after turning three earlier this spring. Vyjack, the next-to-last finisher, was sold for $100,000 at the two-year-old in training sale last fall.

On the other hand, purchasing a moderately inexpensive yearling, untrained and unraced, can sometimes lead to future triumphs. Revolutionary, finishing third in this year's Derby, was bought for only $80,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

Even though price doesn't always predict winnings, proper nutrition is important in supporting the demands of training and racing for all equines.

Of the first four horses to cross the 2013 Kentucky Derby finish line, three--Orb, Revolutionary, and Normandy Invasion--were fueled by feeds manufactured by Hallway Feeds, a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research.

Thoroughbred Trainer Gorder Saddles a Stakes Winner

In the $75,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park, General Election made a gutsy outside stretch run to win by half a length over Giant Finish. The one and one-sixteenth mile ungraded stakes race is open to three-year-olds. The horse is trained by Kellyn Gorder, who selects feed products manufactured by Hallway Feeds to support the efforts of training and racing for the horses in his stable. Hallway Feeds is a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research.

General Election, a son of Harlan's Holiday, claimed his initial victory at Churchill Downs last fall, defeating Northern Lion. The John Battaglia Memorial Stakes was his first win on a synthetic surface, an event that raises the horse's chances on the Kentucky Derby trail.

Gorder also uses Synovate HA on his stable of racehorses. Synovate HA is a liquid sodium hyaluronate supplement available through KERx.

Animal Kingdom to Race, Then Enter Stud in 2013

Animal Kingdom, winner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby, will begin his breeding career at Arrowfield Stud in Australia in September of 2013. It is likely that he will shuttle to the Northern Hemisphere beginning in 2014.

Trained by Graham Motion, Animal Kingdom was the first horse to win the Derby as a first race on a natural dirt surface. He will be the first Derby winner to begin his stud career in Australia, and also the first Derby winner in more than a decade to race as a five-year-old. Plans include entry in the Grade I Turf Handicap at Gulfstream Park in February as a prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup in March. A start at Royal Ascot in England in June is also a possibility.

Animal Kingdom was raised at Denali Stud in Versailles, Kentucky, on products manufactured by Hallway Feeds, a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research. The horse was trained and raced on Hallway's Prep 14, a product specially formulated to support the efforts of hard-working competition horses.

In his racing career, Animal Kingdom has been a graded stakes winner on natural and synthetic surfaces and has finished either first or second in eight of his nine starts to date. He has earned well over $2 million at the track.

Baffert Takes First Four Places in Grade III Hollywood Prevue Stakes

When top Thoroughbred trainer Bob Baffert saddled four of the five starters in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes, he knew several of his horses would finish in the money. As it turned out, his equine charges finished one-two-three-four in the race.

Really Mr Greely, the winner, went off at 11-1 odds and led from gate to wire. Half a length back at the finish was Super Ninety Nine. Shakin It Up finished in third place ahead of Baffert's fourth entry, Z Big Apple.

Really Mr Greely's earnings rose to $85,620 with the win. Baffert-trained horses have won the Hollywood Prevue Stakes five times before, including last year's race when So Brilliant claimed the victory.

Horses in Baffert's training stable are prepared and raced on products manufactured by Hallway Feeds, a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research.

Game On Dude Fueled by Hallway Feeds

Thoroughbred trainer Bob Baffert saddled two horses for the Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap (Grade 1) and watched them finish one-two at Betfair Hollywood Park last weekend.

In a repeat of claiming the same two places in the same race last year, Baffert picked up the 2012 win with Game On Dude while Richard's Kid took second place. Carrying high weight at 124 pounds, Game On Dude added the victory to an impressive record, having won the San Antonio Stakes and the Californian Stakes earlier in the year. The horse placed second last year in the Breeders' Cup Classic, a race for which he has already qualified for 2012.
