About NRM

NRM is the largest, most experienced stock feed manufacturer in New Zealand. It has been an integral part of New Zealand's rural backbone for more than a hundred years.

The old NRM feed mill in Fort Street, Auckland, stands as a reminder of NRM's history. John Lamb originally purchased the Fort Street site in 1875 for the sum of 1,027 pounds. In 1888, Auckland Roller Mills Ltd was incorporated and a year later was amalgamated with Firth's first eight-hour Roller Mill. In 1899 the company name was changed to that used today, the Northern Roller Milling Company - NRM.

In the early days the main objective of NRM was to manufacture flour from wheat. The wheat would pass through a series of rollers and during this process of gradual reduction, flour is separated from the by-products, bran and pollard, which were fed to stock. The first dedicated production of stock feed took place in 1944.

In 1954 NRM installed its first press to make pelleted stock feed. As the popularity of pellets grew, flour by-products gradually became a smaller part of the raw materials used in stock feed manufacturing. Various grains, protein meals and vitamin and mineral premixes were added to pelleted feeds to improve animal performance.

Since 1992, NRM ceased to have any association with the flour milling business and has became solely a stock feed and premix manufacturer.

In 2009, NRM was purchased by ABB Grain an Australian agribusiness with divisions that include national supply chain, grain marketing, malt and rural services. In September 2009, ABB Grain and leading Canadian agribusiness Viterra reached an historic agreement to combine their operations. By coming together, ABB Grain and Viterra have created a world-class company with an expanded global reach and presence.

The past 100 years has seen an enormous amount of change in rural markets. NRM's ability to adapt to these changes can be attributed to its history of manufacturing expertise, innovative quality products and most of all, its relationship with its customers.

Today, NRM manufactures from six feed mills across the country from Rolleston in Canterbury to Wiri in Auckland. It caters for all types of animals from calves and horses to rabbits and alpacas.

NRM employs a team of full time animal nutritionists who provide technical advice covering every aspect of animal production including feed management, disease control, housing and husbandry. NRM has strategic relationships with leading research institutions including Massey University and KER (Kentucky Equine Research). In New Zealand, KER works exclusively with NRM in designing diets, providing consultancy services and delivering educational seminars.
